Experiencing a loose tooth for the first time can be a thrilling moment in a child’s life, especially if they are awaiting the Tooth Fairy, who carries sparkly clothes and in America, silently leaves money or a small toy under pillows. Did you know that different countries have different Tooth Fairy customs? Your pediatric dentist at The Woodlands can fill you in on all the Tooth Fairy tales from around the world!
England, Canada, and Australia
The same fairy we know here in America also visits kids in England, Canada, and Australia – taking lost teeth out of children’s bedrooms and replacing them with tokens of her appreciation. However, as fairies are hard to find, she has helpers such as small animals who act on her behalf.
France
In France, there is La Petite Souris – a tiny mouse who takes teeth out from under pillows and leaves money or candy behind.
Spain, Argentina & More
Heading West to Spain we find Ratoncito Peréz – another mouse who visits Spanish children as well as those in Argentina. He looks for teeth placed inside glasses of water and will leave presents once he takes them. Ratoncito Peréz is joined by other mice from Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia Venezuela, South Africa & Greece who all work with the Tooth Fairy to make sure kids have plenty of magical memories.
Brazil & India
Africa
In many areas of Africa, similar traditions apply such as throwing top teeth onto the roof but burying bottom ones into the ground – legend says if lizards find these buried treasures new ones won’t grow!
The anticipation of a visit from our beloved Tooth Fairy or any one of her helpers is an unforgettable experience that every child should enjoy. Make sure your little one has healthy gums and maintains good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and seeing their pediatric dentist at The Woodlands twice yearly.
