Poem: Garri – by Mueen

TINY GRAINS OF WHITE AND YELLOW
FINE DUST, PRIDE OF AFRICA
ALLY OF SWEETENERS
MASTER OF NUTS
SAVIOUR FOOD OF THE POOR
ENTICING THE RICH WITH MILK AND HONEY
CASSAVA FLAKES OR CASSAVA DUST ?

SOME LIKE IT HARSH. SOME, MELLOW
I LIKE MINE PLEASANTLY SOUR
MOLDED INTO FINERY WHEN SCATTERED IN HOT WATERS
CALLING TO SOUPS OF OUR AFRICAN POTS
FOR EVERY ‘PAKO’AND ‘AJEBO’
OH ! OUR OWN DEAR ‘GARRI’
WHITE MAN, TRY YOU MUST !
