Hailey Bieber has opened up about her future as a mother, admitting that while she’s eager to have children, she’s fearful of parenting in the spotlight.
‘I want kids so bad but I get scared,’ she told The Times
When asked about how she feels about raising a family in her privileged and public life, she told the news outlet: ‘I literally cry about this all the time!’
Hailey, who married singer Justin Bieber in 2018 when she was 21-years-old, has had to publicly defend her marriage on numerous occasions in recent years, including at the time of the couple’s one year wedding anniversary, when she spoke about receiving ‘divorce’ comments.
Referring to how negative commentary towards her nuptials and relationship taints her vision of future motherhood, she said: ‘It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends. I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.
But Bieber added: ‘We can only do the best we can to raise them. As long as they feel loved and safe.’
In a February 2022 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Hailey shared that she was in no rush to have kids with Justin. Though she initially wanted to become a mum at a ‘super young’ age, she said she had become content with delaying motherhood for longer.
Hailey said: ‘I think ideally in the next couple of years we would try. But there’s a reason they call it try, right? You don’t know how long that process is ever going to take.
‘Definitely no kids this year; that would be a little bit hectic, I think.’
The businesswoman, who launched her skincare line Rohde in June 2022 and serves as the ‘Creative of Everything’ for the brand, added: ‘There’s this thing that happens for women when you get married. Everybody always assumes it’s: “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby.”
‘Well, what about all the things I want to accomplish in my business?’
Hailey’s decision to delay starting a family may also have something to do with already ticking off marriage at a young age. Speaking to our sister site ELLE US in 2018, she explained of her marriage: ‘I was married when I was 21, two months before I turned 22, which is insanely young. And sounds almost ridiculous when you say it out loud.’
She added: ‘Although I do think for somebody like me and somebody like Justin, [it’s different]. We’ve seen a lot for our age. We have both lived enough life to know that’s what we wanted.’
Elsewhere in the interview, she said at the start of her and Justin’s marriage she ‘just wanted to hide,’ due to the lack of privacy.
‘I was like, “I don’t want people so in my business. I feel like everybody’s up my ass”. I was like, “Can there be no anonymity? Can I have any of it back?”’
