Andrew Garfield has become something of a fan favorite when it comes to Spider-Man. His portrayal of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man films captured hearts with his emotional depth, wit, and natural chemistry with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. But despite the love he garnered, Garfield’s time as the web-slinger came to an abrupt halt after just two films, leaving fans wondering: why did he stop? And could he ever return? Recently, Garfield shared his thoughts on the possibility of putting on the iconic suit once more, but only under specific conditions.
Let’s dive into why he stopped playing Spider-Man in the first place—and what it would take to see him return.
Why Did He Stop?
Garfield’s journey as Spider-Man began with a bang in 2012 when he took on the role of The Amazing Spider-Man. Fans praised his take on the character, which struck a perfect balance between the dorky, lovable Peter Parker and the heroic, nimble Spider-Man. In the 2014 sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Garfield continued to shine, even as the movie struggled to meet studio expectations at the box office. Despite solid performances, the sequel didn’t live up to Sony’s hopes financially, leading to behind-the-scenes decisions that ultimately took the story in a different direction.
Around the same time, Sony was in negotiations with Marvel Studios, aiming to bring Spider-Man into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The result? A new deal that would introduce a younger, MCU-integrated Spider-Man, leading to the casting of Tom Holland as the next Peter Parker. Garfield, despite his growing popularity in the role, was caught in the middle of this transition. The shift toward a new Spidey for the MCU meant that Garfield’s run as the beloved superhero was cut short. His version of the character didn’t receive the proper closure that fans—and Garfield himself—had hoped for.
It was a disappointing end to what many believed could have been a long and successful Spider-Man arc. But that wasn’t the last we’d see of Garfield in the red and blue suit.
What Are the Circumstances for His Return?
In 2021, Garfield shocked audiences when he made a surprise return as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sharing the screen with both Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, Garfield’s reprisal of the role sparked major nostalgia, and for many fans, it felt like the redemption his Spider-Man storyline deserved. His reappearance not only brought closure but reignited excitement about the possibility of him returning for future Spider-Man projects.
So, what would it take for Andrew Garfield to return for good?
In a recent interview with Esquire, Garfield opened up about his willingness to put on the Spidey suit again—but he has specific criteria. He’s not looking to return just for the sake of it. “I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing,” Garfield said. For him, it’s about more than just nostalgia. It’s about creating something new, exciting, and meaningful. He expressed that the project would have to be “additive to the culture” and offer a concept that hasn’t been done before.
Garfield is interested in taking Spider-Man to new, uncharted territory—something “unique and odd” that allows him to dig deeper into the character. He clearly loves Peter Parker, but if he’s going to return, it has to be for a project that feels fresh and purposeful. In his words, “If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.” The role still holds a special place in his heart, but it has to be the right fit.
This makes sense for an actor like Garfield, who’s known for taking on projects that challenge him creatively. He’s not just looking for another superhero movie; he wants something that speaks to him and resonates with audiences in a new way.
Will He Ever Return?
For now, the door remains open. Garfield’s love for the character is clear, and his fans are certainly eager to see him don the suit again. With the multiverse storyline now a central theme in the MCU, there are endless possibilities for how his Spider-Man could make a comeback.
But if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that Garfield won’t return unless the role pushes boundaries and offers something fresh. He’s not in it for a paycheck or the spectacle—he’s in it for the storytelling. And if the right project comes along, Andrew Garfield just might swing back into our screens as Spider-Man, ready to surprise us all once again.
In the end, it’s not about when or how, but why. And for Andrew Garfield, that why needs to be compelling enough to make his return truly unforgettable.
What This Means for the Spider-Man Franchise
If Andrew Garfield does return to the Spider-Man universe, it could open up a floodgate of opportunities. Fans are speculating that he could reprise his role in upcoming Marvel crossovers or even in a standalone film. Imagine the thrilling dynamics and story arcs that could unfold with him as part of the ensemble! With Tom Holland currently wearing the Spider-Man cape, the merging of different Spider-Men might just lead to unforgettable adventures.

Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man was relatable, deeply human, and filled with emotion.
