Jessica Mulroney discussed how Meghan Markle saved the brand just by wearing a Dress
It is an undeniable fact that Meghan Markle has now become one of the world most influential figures in fashion.
It can be noted that the Duchess of Sussex influences people’s wardrobes by nearly everything she steps out wearing — whether it be comfortable Veja sneakers or a stylish Sentaler coat — it sure sends fans into a buying frenzy as they try to recreate her look (and of course there’s a reason PEOPLE named her the the best dressed star of 2018!).
Meghan’s fashion influence has grown so powerful, her friend Jessica Mulroney believes the Duchess even helped save Calgary-based fashion brand Nonie from shutting down after she wore the label’s chic trench dress to a royal appearance in July 2018.
“It’s tough to be a designer. It is really tough to be a Canadian designer,” Mulroney told HarpersBAZAAR in a new digital fashion feature that highlights the stylist and fashion tastemaker’s career
She noted how hard it can be for Canadian brands to enter the U.S. market, find suitable retailers and sustain their businesses.
“Sometimes all you need is that onetime break and it’ll change your life. If you get your item on a celebrity, that’s almost like the top of the top—a new way of creating business,” Mulroney said, adding, “I have a lot of friends in the entertainment business and I myself have a significant Instagram account, so I can throw them a bone and wear the earrings if I like them. Or if I know somebody’s doing a red carpet, I’ll be like, ‘Hey, you should try these.’ It’s kind of organic, but if I can do it, it usually does help.”
But besides that, Mulroney is keeping her lips zipped when it comes to her royal best friend.
“Listen, every person has to have a bit of privacy in their life. There are certain things I hold very dear and secret,” she said. “There are things I’ll never talk about for sure. My life is an open book, but there’s always a few secret pages in the back that nobody will be able to read.”
And while many label her as Meghan Markle’s stylist, Mulroney told HarpersBAZAAR.com she feels that her career expands way beyond that title.
“Styling is such a small part of what I do,” she said. “I have, like, 10 jobs. People don’t know that I work so much on the back end of things. They think I’m just dressing people. My business is with brands.”
Mulroney gets to feature some of those brands through her role as Good Morning America‘s fashion correspondent, a huge crossover for her career that’s building her public recognition in the U.S.
“Jess is incredibly talented and brings a smart eye to accessible style,” a GMA executive told HarpersBAZAAR.com, “She is intimately involved with each of her segments from the initial pitch to the model fittings to each of the tips and takeaways for our viewers. We love working with her.”
But some of her proudest moments come from giving advice to those in her inner circle and even fans that reach out on social media.
“I do have a lot of friends who ask for my advice and I get a lot of women who come to me, real women who write to me and say, ‘I don’t have a lot of money, but I have my daughter’s wedding coming up. Can you suggest something to wear?’ I’ll screen grab things for them and send them through Instagram,” she shared. “I do it all the time with my mom.”
