- Atlas shrugged. Wriiten by Annalissa rosenbaum aka Ayn Rand in 1957, this novel is a literary edifice dedicated and intended by the author to be an appreciation, acknowledgement and exploration of the practical applications of liberty. Whilst many Critics of the novel seems to popularly view it as simplistic, polarizing and elitist while it’s admirers opt and even disagree to the contrary in protest, investigation speaking these two views do not even come close to crash the surface of the plot, context and ideas inherent in the book nor understand the full motives of it’s writer.
The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is “the role of man’s mind in existence”. The book explores a number of philosophical themes from which Rand would subsequently develop Objectivism as philosophy. In doing so, it expresses the advocacy of reason, individualism, and capitalism, and depicts what Rand saw to be the failures of governmental coercion.
Atlas Shrugged received largely negative reviews after its 1957 publication, but achieved enduring popularity and ongoing sales in the following decades. with all it’s themes and controversial receptions, it is certainly a great choice for a curious person and worth every penny as a novel.
- Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Regarded as one
of the most influential novels of the nineteenth century, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment tells the tragic story of Raskolnikov, a talented former student whose warped philosophical outlook drives him to commit murder. A worthwhile read for any curious individual.
- Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Written in 1984 by a survivor of a Nazi Concentration camp, this book is nothing short of extraordinary and enlightening. Frankl wrote in his book, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” The search for meaning, Frankl believed, is the primary motivational factor of humans. This book is not only insightful but quite helpful for people dealing with depression. Certainly helpful read for intellectual and non-intellectual alike.
- The Road To Wigan Pier by George Owell. First published in 1937, This book is a time tested gem of insight on society and the concept and practice of socialism. The first half of this work documents his sociological investigation of and into the bleak living conditions among the working class in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the industrial north of England before World War 2. The second half is a long essay on his middle-class upbringing, and the development of his political conscience, questioning British attitudes towards Socialism.
